What exactly is satvik food? Why Satvik food during Navratri?

Ayurveda divides foods into three groups based on their nature and the response they elicit in the body after consumption. The three categories are: –

  • Taamasic dishes
  • Satvik dishes
  • Raajasic dishes

People eat saatvik meals whilst fasting. But, aside from the religious aspect, there is a scientific explanation. Sharad Navratri takes place in the months of October and November, which marks the change from autumn to winter. Our immunity tends to wane as the seasons change. Switching to satvik cuisine during this season allows your digestive system to relax and cleanses your body of any toxins.

The word satvik comes from the Sanskrit word sattva, which means “pure, natural, vital, clean, active, and conscious.” Fresh fruits, curd, rock salt, seasonal vegetables, and mild spices like coriander and black pepper are all Saatvik cuisine.
