NIDHI-PRAYAS: Fueling Early-Stage Innovation for AtmaNirbhar Bharat

NIDHI-PRAYAS: Building India’s Innovation-Driven Startup Ecosystem

In the dynamic landscape of Indian entrepreneurship, early-stage innovation often faces its greatest challenge before it even begins—funding the prototype. Bridging the gap between an idea and a viable product demands resources, guidance, and the freedom to experiment without fear of failure. This is where the NIDHI-PRAYAS program steps in, lighting the path for India’s aspiring innovators.

What is NIDHI-PRAYAS?

NIDHI-PRAYAS (PRomoting and Accelerating Young and ASpiring Innovators & Startups) is a flagship initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, under its umbrella scheme NIDHI (National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations). The program is managed through the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB).

The core objective of PRAYAS is to support young innovators with grants to build a Proof of Concept (PoC), enabling them to validate and iterate their ideas before entering full-scale development or approaching investors and incubators. This early-stage support is critical for unlocking breakthrough products, especially in the deep tech, agritech, cleantech, medtech, and manufacturing sectors.

Why PRAYAS is Crucial for Indian Startups

  1. Funding Without Equity Pressure
Innovators receive up to ₹10 lakhs to build a prototype—without parting with equity or diluting ownership.
  2. Encourages Risk-Taking
The grant allows entrepreneurs to try, fail, and pivot early—without the burden of commercial failure.
  3. Prepares Startups for Incubation and Commercialization
PRAYAS serves as the first validation stage, setting up innovators for later-stage acceleration programs and funding.
  4. Supports AtmaNirbhar Bharat
The initiative is a powerful tool to foster indigenous technology development, reducing dependency on foreign products and strengthening India’s self-reliance.

Who Can Apply?

  • Individuals (Indian citizens) or teams with innovative technology-based ideas
  • Applicants must be in the pre-incubation stage, without a developed prototype
  • The applicant must be a first-generation entrepreneur, ideally under the age of 35
  • The idea should not have received significant funding from other government schemes or venture capitalists

Where to Apply: PRAYAS Centres Across India

PRAYAS is implemented through selected incubators across the country known as PRAYAS Centres (PCs). These are often part of Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Parks (STEPs) or Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) associated with top-tier academic, research, or management institutions.

These centres provide:

  • Infrastructure support (labs, testing, fabrication)
  • Mentorship and technical guidance
  • Networking and ecosystem access

➡️ To find the nearest PRAYAS Centre across North, South, East, and West India—and check whether applications are open or closed—visit the official directory here:

  • East India: Opportunities available in Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, and Bihar

Each centre may have different sectoral focuses and timelines, so checking individual websites and application details is essential.

How to Get Started

  1. Identify your nearest PRAYAS Centre
  2. Check the centre’s eligibility criteria and sectoral focus
  3. Apply with a detailed proposal outlining the innovation and expected PoC roadmap
  4. If shortlisted, you may be invited to pitch to the selection committee

The NIDHI-PRAYAS program is more than just a grant—it’s a launchpad for India’s next generation of entrepreneurs. By focusing on local innovations with global relevance, and backing them with funds, infrastructure, and mentorship, PRAYAS is catalyzing a transformation in how India builds technology-driven startups.

If you’re an innovator with a bold idea but lacking the means to build a prototype, now is the time to explore PRAYAS.
